As nice as it would be to always tow a trailer in sunny, calm weather, we know that’s not the case much of the time. During spring and summer, heavy rains can make roads and highways treacherous places for typical cars and trucks, and they’re even more dangerous if you’re towing a travel trailer behind you. Here are some tips to employ to keep your rain towing journeys as safe as possible.

Balance Cargo & Don’t Overload

A well-balanced load that is not too heavy for either your travel trailer or your towing vehicle is crucial to towing success. Make sure to balance your cargo between the left and right sides of your trailer as much as you can. Check the weight limits of your travel trailer, its hitch, and your towing vehicle. If you’re concerned about the load being too heavy, find a weigh station as soon as you get on the highway to double-check.

Stay Under Speed Limits & Move With Caution

Wet, slick roads are not great for speeding. Keep your speed at least ten miles below the posted speed limit and be prepared to brake gently for stopped traffic. Stay in one lane as much as you can, and avoid making any sudden maneuvers on wet roads. Keep your lights on when the visibility is limited and fix your gaze on the road ahead so that you can react to obstacles.

Be Ready to Pull Over

Finally, if all else fails and the rain seems too difficult to tow through, never be afraid to pull over at the next exit or even on a safe shoulder to wait conditions out. It’s better to get there late than not at all! If you can spot bad weather on the forecast before you head out, you may also be able to delay your drive until clearer conditions prevail.
