Fifth Wheel Towing Tips

Investing in a fifth wheel can be a great way to take your RVing experience to the next level. A fifth wheel is going to be one of the most luxurious towable RV options available to you and you’re sure to enjoy every amenity and feature you’ll get. They’re also some of the largest towable RVs, and while this can make RV camping more comfortable, it can also be a challenge to figure out how you’re going to transport your RV from one place to the next. However, it might not be as difficult as you think. 

Using the Correct Vehicle to Tow

The top priority is making sure you have the right tow vehicle. There are a couple of important requirements when it comes to fifth wheel tow vehicles. Firstly, the fifth wheel hitch gets installed directly into the flatbed of your vehicle, creating an overlap between the two parts of the unit. This actually creates more control and stability for you, making it a safer option. However, this means you’ll need a vehicle with a flatbed, like a truck. 

And you won’t want to get just any truck. The truck will need to be able to handle the extra weight it’ll be towing behind it. This will probably mean at least a half ton truck, though most likely bigger. Compare the weight of your fifth wheel (plus the weight of cargo) to the towing limits of your tow vehicle to find out if you’re going to need to factor in a new truck into your budget.

Hitching

When it’s time to hitch the fifth wheel, start by lining up the truck with the RV and slowly backing up. You can ask a friend or family member to help guide you, although many fifth wheel owners can just use their mirrors to do this. As you get closer, you’ll want to adjust the hitch using the jack so it’s going to meet the fifth wheel at the right height. You’ll also want to make sure the jaws of the hitch are open, or that they’re set to “receive” mode. Continue backing up until you hear a click, indicating the two parts of the unit have connected and you’re properly hooked up. Then lock the receiver in place using the cotter pin and you should be finished.
